Do you have oily skin?

Definition

  • Oily skin is a sign the skin is producing too much sebum, a natural hydrating agent
  • Looks shiny and oily in the t-zone: the sides of the nose, chin and forehead
  • "Slippery" to the touch
  • Lacklustre skin tone
  • Thick texture
  • Pores are enlarged and visible to the naked eye, sometimes clogged and showing blackheads
  • Prone to pimples
  • Does not hold makeup well

Beware! Oily skin can turn into an acne problem

What to avoid

Avoid soap or makeup removal bars and never let water or toning lotion dry on your skin - pat it dry with tissue paper

Avoid water-based products and cleansing simply with water and a sponge or in the shower

Avoid overly-harsh products that, besides removing excess oil, strip your skin of its essential oils. When this happens, the skin reacts by putting the sebaceous glands into overdrive, producing even more oil to compensate for the loss.

If your skin feels dry after using a product, it is too harsh: change products. It can affect the external layer of the epidermis and "crease" it, causing fine lines. It also prevents the free circulation of your skin's natural oil and can cause clogging.

What to do

Cleanse your face morning and night with a cleanser designed for oily skin - paradoxically, these are usually oil-based because they dissolve oil effectively rather then "stripping" it.
By lathering the product with a soft brush you will emulsify trapped dirt and your skin will be more easily rid of undesirable residue.
Always follow with a toning lotion, which will get rid of all remaining impurities.
Toning lotion is a must: by tightening pores it keeps dirt out and allows your face to regain its velvety smoothness.
Hydrating day cream - use a cream that is nourishing but oil-free in order to prevent "shine."
Choose a fluid base to reduce shine while protecting the skin against outside aggressors.
Hydrating night cream - just because skin is oily doesn't mean it doesn't need nourishment. Your night cream should be nourishing but not oily (such products do exist!)
Use an exfoliant twice a week. These skin scrub products contains little granules that, when used with a small brush, provide deep cleansing.
Use a clay mask once a week. This is an oxygenating agent, which cleanses and purifies the skin. It eliminates dirt and oil and restores the skin's normal balance. Skin becomes fresh, clean and radiant.

Sebum

Attacked from all sides, the skin defends itself the only way it can: with sebum. When it gets too much attention, assailed by too-frequent washing or exposure to cold or sun, it will overproduce sebum in an attempt to protect its vulnerability. The so-called "horny layer" of the epidermis thickens and the enlarged pores close up, trapping dirt. A micro-infection follows: a nasty blackhead, sometimes followed by the dreaded pimple. In this case too, the problem should be treated from the inside. A reduced-fat diet often goes a long way in solving the problem. Drinking 2 litres of water a day allows the skin to drain blood towards the outside, cleansing the follicles and pores.

But don't forget the positive side… oily skin stays young longer. Being covered by oil allows it to defer the appearance of wrinkles.

Tips and tricks

Minimize your intake of raw fruits and vegetables as many of them have astringent properties that close up the pores, trapping sebum inside. Fight problems
